hen a product package is a part of the life cycle, it doesn’t generate a surplus of trash. Using plant materials to fashion single use packages is the most sustainable way for us to enjoy consumer goods. When finished, the package returns to the web of life.

ommon package materials such as plastic and metal are separate from life and far from being inert, they create toxic waste that is inimical to life. Plastic is particularly harmful when it breaks down to microscopic particles and is then taken up by life to poison entire food chains. This is an incredibly high price to pay for a package that is used only for a short period of time. Another commonly used single use package material, glass, while being inert, uses a tremendously wasteful amount of energy to make, transport and reuse.

ero Waste Packaging defines a class of single use packaging that isn’t toxic or persist in the environment after use. Zero Waste also means that minimal energy is used to make a package or recycle it. Currently, marketers use ‘zero waste’ to describe business practices such as recycling office waste which is a great start. Life Cycle Packaging not only enfolds the concepts and practices of Zero Waste, but advances material usage and end of life management to another level of responsibility.
